Get Cookin' Apron {tutorial}

Why it's taken me this long to make myself an apron is beyond me! I am a fairly messy cook so it only seems appropriate to have something to wipe my hands on every now and then.
If you're anything like me you too could use this practical yet fashionable piece.

Here's what you'll need:
3/4 yard of main fabric for the body (these two came from Fabricate)
3/4 yard of coordinating fabric for band, ties, and pocket
Ruler/yard stick
Fabric marker
Sewing machine
Fabric scissors
Pins
Pocket pattern provided

To begin cut out the following:
Body: 22"h x 33"w
Band: 6 1/2"h x 24" w
Ties (x2): 6 1/2"h x 42" w
Pocket (x2)

Using the pattern provided cut out two pocket pieces, set aside.

Taking the band piece iron in all four edges about 1/2" as shown below.

Fold in half and iron again, set aside.

Taking the main "body" piece iron in the sides 1/2" and again another 1/2". Stitch a 1/4" seam.
After the sides are done iron up the bottom 1/2" and again another 1/2". Stitch a 1/4" seam.

At the top of the apron body you are going to sew two stitches approximately 1/8" apart. You will NOT back stitch here.

Grabbing one of the strings start to pull the fabric so that it begins to gather.

This is over gathered, I had to ungather some of it.

Taking the strips for the ties iron in the sides and one end about a 1/2". Then draw the corners in as shown above, iron them down. The fold the tie in half, see below.

Stitch an 1/8" seam around the edges.

Using the band piece that you have previously prepared open it up flat and place the raw edge of the tie about 1/2" inside. Fold the flap over, pin in place and stitch a 1/4" seam. Repeat for the other tie.

Opening up the bottom of the band slide in the body. Pin the body in place and sew the band in place. I used a zig-zag stitch on the edge so that I was more likely to get the stitch on the back side of the apron as well.

To make the pocket pin the pocket pieces RIGHT sides together and stitch an 1/8" seam leaving a opening at the top of the pocket.

I left about a 1 1/2" opening. Then pull the inside out.

Iron the top of the pocket with the seams inside and stitch an 1/8" seam across the top.

Drawing the sides in to overlap in the middle pin in place and stitch a seam down both pleats.
Then decide where you want your pocket to go, pin it in place and top stitch the sides and bottom.
There you have it!
Now all you need is a great messy recipe!
