Fat Quarter Baby Girl Sash Skirt {Tutorial}

Spring is in the air and Easter is just around the corner! This is my favorite time of year and to celebrate it I made this sweet little spring sash skirt for my little girl.

Here's what you'll need:
2 fat quarter fabrics
Elastic (15" for a baby between 11.5-16lb)
Fabric scissors
Thread
Sewing machine
Pins
Measuring tape
Safety pin

To start take the main skirt fabric and cut it in half length wise so you have two pieces (aprox.22"x8 1/2")

Line up the short sides together and pin in place. Stitch a 1/4" seam down the side.

Iron the seam open as shown. Then turn up the bottom edge 1/4" and iron. Fold up once more 1/4" and iron. Stitch a 1/4" seam along the folded edge.

Fold down the top about an 1" and iron in place (a bit farther than your elastic insert).

Trim away a bit of the top folded flap as shown. Stitch a seam along the edge creating a pocket for the elastic strip, see below.

I used a zig zag stitch. Attach a safety pin to the end of the elastic and slide into the pocket.

Stitch elastic down on each end.

Pin the raw edges together with the RIGHT sides of the fabric together. Stitch a 1/4" seam down the side.

Iron open the seam. Stitch a small seam at the bottom of the open seam to keep it from flapping up.

Turn right side out.

To make the sash make two strips (22"x6")

Join the strips together on short sides with a 1/4" seam.

Start by ironing in the long sides 1/4" then fold in half and iron again. Finally tuck in the corners as shown and iron down. Fold the sides together.

Stitch an 1/8" down the edges.

Lay out the sash and place the skirt on top a bit off centered.

Stitch a seam down the middle of the sash in the back. Bring the ties around to the front and tie a bow.
And there you have it!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Happy Crafting! & Happy Easter!

  10. So, so cute! I have a daughter who wears 18-24 months. Can you tell me how much fabric and elastic I would need to make one for her please?

Thanks so much for sharing your talent! :)

    1. Thanks My daughter currently fits into the size that I made so I use her stuff to create the size. I don't think going with fat quarters will work that well for an 18-24 month size. Since most fabrics come in 44" widths you'd need to add to it to make the skirt fuller like a strip that's 55" (so you'll need to sew two pieces together to get it that long). I'd also make the length of the skirt from the waist to the knee at least 10" rather than the 8" I did. You need to make the sash longer as well (at least 1/3 longer). For the waist I would try to get your hands on a pair some elastic shorts or pants and measure it. Add an additional 1/2" seam allowance. I hope this is helpful and not too confusing :/

I made this yesterday, its super cute but I just couldn't tie the sash in a bow. It wasn't quite long enough for the width so I had to stitch a bow together rather than tying it. Next time I'll adjust the sash measurements but I'm definately going to make more of these!

    1. I'm sorry the sash wasn't long enough :( Did you make the skirt bigger in general? Your feedback is great and I don't want others to run into the same problem! Thanks!

    1. Well I don't have any photos but here's how I do it...put the skirt around your own leg the direction you would put it on if you were going to wear it. Then do the "bunny ears" approach to tying it. Then you just have to mess around with the different parts to perfect it. I hope this is helpful!

    1. For the 9 year old I'd take a look at my adult skirt pattern and adjust that way. Good luck! http://www.thisbigoaktree.com/2012/04/high-waisted-sash-skirt-tutorial.html
